Orhodontics is the specialty of Dentistry that deals with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and skeletal malocclusions. Ideal facial aesthetics and optimum function of the stomatognathic system can be achieved through careful diagnosis and treatment planning of each individual case.

Orthodontics is the first dental specialty, introduced back in the beginning of the 20th century. Since then it evolves continuously using the latest technological means. As in other medical or dental specialty, orthodontics requires further postgraduate studies in an accredited institution, after completion of Dental School. Orthodontic specialty is acquired after a complete cycle of three year studies.

Every qualified orthodontist obtains license to practice orthodontics from the Ministry of Health and Public Solidarity and certification from the local Dental Society. Orthodontic specialists treat exclusively orthodontic patients.

In Greece, orthodontic specialty has officially been recognized since 1989 and certified orthodontists are listed in directories of the official Dental Societies.
